The No (Low) Spend Challenge Update, this week's numbers and Friday's Food Waste Challenge

Well, it's Friday, and it's time to check in on any food waste! Thankfully I only had one food item to throw away:  one small zucchini.  I was able to rescue the other two zucchinis, a yellow squash and leftover pasta by making minestrone soup yesterday...but this poor guy was too far gone...

Approximate out of pocket cost for this loss?  $1.25.

Which brings me to this week's money report...
It was a great money week, thanks to the No (Low) spending challenge and an increase in salary from my part time job!

Some highlights of the week
  • I received an 8% increase in salary this week! It was not automatic...I had to ask for it but that's a whole other post!
  • I started this week with $265.00 in cash, and ended with $198.00 going forward!  I was very careful with my cash spending and was able to fill up my gas tank ($30), replenish food items ($30) and enjoy a night of Bunco ($6) with my friends.  I still have almost $200 left!
  • I used up food I already had, and had very little food waste.
  • Used coupons and extra care bucks to purchase hair color and dishwasher tabs..total cost? $1.09
  • I sent $250 (from my checkbook) to my ING account for "holding" (thanks Morrison!).  If I don't need it for the next two weeks, I will forward that amount to my EF, jumpstarting the savings.  I'm not sure I'll make the whole $500.00, but we shall see how the spending goes in the next couple of weeks.
Going forward....

I got paid today and there was an extra $182 in my paycheck (thanks to extra hours and my increase).   I will put that amount "aside" as extra and use the rest of my paycheck for my expenses for the next two weeks. The cash will cover all food expenses, gasoline for my car, personal, miscellaneous and entertainment expenses. Cash seems to be working....:)!

All in all, I would say this was a successful week!

How was your week?

Great job Sharon!!! Congrats on the pay raise, I'm sure you deserve every penny of it! I too have some extra bucks at CVS and more at Hallmark, hope for some good sales next week so I can go on a shopping spree with it all! Cash really is king, I got into a bad habit at the end of the year using the debit card and way over spent on about everything. Love reading of all the ways everyone in the challenge are getting their EF bumped up this month!!

Good job Sharon! I think I would find the low spend challenge a bit too challenging :)

Good job. Remember not even chickens will eat an over grown zucchini! I did much better this week. Cash is always better. When I write checks I always spend more. I am terrified of debit cards.

Yes indeed Sharon, you had a very good week! I just love this January challenge because I hope to carry forward this "careful, thoughtful low spending diet" Carla has encouraged us to join.
And no, I wouldn't use that zucchini either, you have to draw the line somewhere!

You did awesome! However, I think that your biggest achievement this week was asking for a raise. That's not easy to do and takes a lot of guts. Good for you!
