I shopped at BJ's on Saturday and forgot to use a $2.00 coupon. I decided to go back to BJ's and cash in the coupon for the $2.00. (BJ's is only a couple of miles away, and I had to fill up a gas tank, so it wasn't a wasted trip.)
I also bought a box of organic granola cereal at Target. Last night I poured a bowl with some fresh blueberries...I almost gagged as it was rancid (the cereal, not the blueberries...I ate those!) I didn't want to waste the money I spent on this box of cereal, nor did I want to list it this Friday in my food waste post, so I brought the box back to Target for a full refund on my way home from work.
I'm not sure I would have done either of those things if I were not using cash, and if I were not watching my food waste. BUT I added $5.37 back into my cash stash for the week.
I'd say that was cheap, frugal and smart...
What do you say?

Oh I hate when food is bad when I bring it home. Most of the time it is produce, I have to pay more attention when I purchase it. I always pick u the bad apple so to speak.
All of the above!! Hey a girls gotta do what it takes to save a buck, it's the home strech! You might be able to take it one extra step by e-mailing the cereal company and letting then know what happened, might just get a free coupon to try it again.
@Niki, I seem to do the same thing, usually because I'm in a rush. But, I couldn't tell with the cereal! :)!
@Debby, I like that idea..writing to the company might work too! But, honestly, I'm not sure I'd want to try that cereal again...it was that bad.
You were smart.
I also agree with Debby-e-mail the cereal coupon, they will send you a free coupon. I do it often and that always happens.
good for you!
I agree too! First off, no matter the price they need to know that something bad is on the shelf. Since you were close with the coupon, why not? I think its the small ways we train ourselves to to be careful with our money only prepares us for true and permanant change! Great job!
In order for a cereal to go rancid, it had to be really OLD. Like up on the shelf for like a year or so.
Why are you buying food at Target in the first place? I wouldn't buy food at Target. That's like buying food at CVS, a drug store. The turn-around would not be as good as a 100% food store.
But yes, anytime I buy something that is of inferior quality, I bring it back and demand a refund. I do it on my next shopping trip. I wouldn't go out of the way, however. My closest store to me is 10 miles round trip. And yes, I would send an email to the mfg. Did you note the date on the box of cereal? Was it expired?
i'd say that is being a smart consumer. companies need to know when something is less than satisfactory and they probably needed to pull the remaining items off the shelf.
Like you, if I was using cash I would have returned the cereal and the coupon too. But... if it was on debit, I doubt that I would have made the effort. Funny how that works.
I agree, definitely smart!
I am all for taking things back when they are bad! Plus getting the extra 2.00 Score!
I think the challenge has made us all more careful with our money
I agree, Sharon! Although I'm guilty of just tossing it & calling it a "waste"! :/
I've returned bad products to the store a few times. The store manager always seems to be grateful for pointing it out. They probably want to get the issue taken care of quickly. It's a smart thing to do.
@Morrison, yes it was expiring in February, but I thought it was because it was organic. I buy very little from Target, actually although their cereal is the cheapest. I've never had a problem with their cereal before, though.
I'm not anti organic, but I have had enough bad experiences with high priced organic food items being bad. Just because organic food demands a premium price does not mean it is of superior quality. Many people fall into the trap of thinking they are eating well and that the taste, while not always what they are accustomed to, must be ok because it is organic. There is a reason that many foods contain preservatives. I choose organic food very carefully now as I have wasted too much money it.
@Sandra, Good point!
I used to just toss bad stuff like this but not any more! You work hard for your money, so why throw them away when it's not your fault! Good for you for going back!
You need to take is back, they should be rotating that cereal, I mean how old would it have to be to be rancid? Yuck!
I'd definitely say that it was cheap, frugal AND smart. It leads to more savings when you are aware of what you have and don't want to waste it. My mom has lived like this for years and says it's her insurance for keeping her food budget down to very little each month.
