It's that time again! I'm so pleased to say that I do not have one thing to show you. No waste this week. No grocery shopping for the weekend either... (Last Saturday I shopped for 10 days).
My increasing awareness of trying not to waste food changed the way I did a few things this week.
How did you do??
Now on to the finances...
As you recall, I had $500 to last me for 10 days. I slipped $100 of the $500 away for safe keeping, and decided to use only the $400.00. With 4 days left of the No(Lo) Spend Challenge, I now have $34.00 left to spend.
How did I spend the $366.00? With great ease.....
Ahem, more specifically, it went to the following...
However, I do still have that $100.00......
This weekend I'll be working on a new declutter project, a reading assignment (with review next week), and of course, my brand new cross-stitch project! I guess there's no need to spend money after all.
How was your financial week?
My increasing awareness of trying not to waste food changed the way I did a few things this week.
- I had two biscuits leftover from Monday night's dinner, as well as a bunch of oven roasted potatoes. Normally I would assume they wouldn't taste good the next day, so I would throw them out. This time, I wrapped them carefully in saran wrap, and put them into the fridge. I decided to utilize both the biscuits and leftover potatoes the next night and made breakfast for dinner. Yummy potatoes and eggs, bacon, biscuits and toast.
- Because I was able to push a meal forward, we now have an *extra* meal (11 days!).
- We didn't finish all of the potatoes and eggs, so I froze the rest in individual baggies. These make a quick breakfast on weekday mornings.
- I had three hot dog rolls leftover from Wednesday night's dinner. I remembered to *freeze* them right away, instead of having them turn green in the bread basket.

Ahem, more specifically, it went to the following...
- $148.00 went to groceries. (Less $5.37 for coupon and return)
- $72.00 went to gasoline (another fill up is needed this weekend)
- $51.37 went for household products and 100 Forever Stamps (just in time before they went up!)
- $100.00 for dinner in DC with my daughter. (We ended up having to pay for parking)
However, I do still have that $100.00......

Sharon, you have done AMAZING this month as well! Well done :) I am so proud of you that you put that $100 aside for safe keeping, if it was in your wallet,do you think you would have spent it? I think I would have! haha... What are the February Goals ???
Sharon, you inspire me! I try really hard not to waste food, either. Thankfully, DH will eat most anything, including leftovers! On another note, isn't gasoline a killer these days???
Sarah
@JP, I'll be thinking about Feb's goals this weekend...when I have a bit of time. I like that the month is pretty clear and that I can dream *big*...
@Sarah,
Why thank you! Yes, gasoline prices are ridiculous...they change almost .10 a gallon each week! Crazy!
Great job! I sometimes will rerun hot dog buns as garlic bread, just open it up, add a little butter and garlic salt then under the broiler, tastes the same as regular garlic toast. I like the idea of hiding $$ from yorself, need to give that a try, just hope I will remember where I put it
Great job Sharon! This whole accountability thing sure makes you more conscious of what you use and what you throw out.
you have had a very good week!! way to go :)
Food Waste Friday has changed my habits also. It makes me plan to use up extra ingredients, and I try not to buy things that I don't have a specific use for.
You did great!! Could you top up that $34 with a bit for gas & still tuck the rest away into savings? We're pretty tight too, my plan is to stay home and ONLY buy needs! lol!
We had a lot of waste this week! I cleaned out the fridge last night and it was not pretty.
I just started using the cash envelope system and it's *amazing* how quickly it can go!
Nice work on the food waste! We tend to go in spurts, where we waste nothing for a few weeks, and then I get busy and things just stack up. I try to be good about using up leftovers, but it feels like it requires military operation precision some times. :-)
Well, make sure you have enough gas to get through. I will never again delay buying gas even for a day. I've gotten stuck in the middle of nowhere when I had no time to deal with things plenty of times, all because I thought I'd be ok until the next gas station. Perhaps you can fill the car and then take 34 from the next pay?
Congrats on your no-food waste!
I used to do exactly what you have been doing - putting left overs in the fridge, just to throw them out a while later or I would skip the fridge & just put them in the bin. The reason I did this was because the husband didn't like left overs which was a hangover from his days living at home. His mothers fridge is full of dead things that she serves up well past their use by - its not great! Anyway I have changed his mind & it is definitely a good way to save a few $.
Every now & again each days left overs are not enough for a complete meal, so at the end of the week I heat them all up and we all help ourselves to some of this & some of that. It goes down surprisingly well.
Good job Sharon!
I wasted a little food this week....my own fault for not freezing leftovers straight away! I will do better next week!
nice job this week! love that you set aside some cash; such a good plan.
hubby is gone for 2 weeks so i am going to have to be diligent about using leftovers so that i don't end up throwing them away. makes a difference when it's just me and the girl v. the 3 of us.
You can always make stuffing with any leftover bread/biscuit stuff. I like to mix it with feta cheese and I stuff anything that I can cram it into. If you bake the buns lightly, season them and then grind them in the food processer they keep in the fridge pretty well for another couple of days -- up to a week. You can freeze that too. You can also use it to thicken soup, chili, stew, make meatballs or meatloaf with, etc. Left over bread never needs to go to waste!
Congrats on having No food waste week. I love how you used leftovers too!
Very inspiring!! You've done amazingly well, great work!
you are doing amazing. I hope you are able to keep that $100 aside.

Really good month! I'm proud of you, and at the same time, exasperated that I haven't followed your example. Sigh! Well, February is coming up and it IS a short month.
Cleaning out the fridge today and cupboards as well to see what we have as we come to the end of the month. I think we have a bit of lettuce that didn't last but I think we're good with everything else from my quick scan last night. A crust or two in the bread bag that no one wants. Will feed them to the birds in our yard!
Great job Sharon! I had a few wrinkly grape tomatoes that I was going to throw out but I used them in an omelet instead! I've had no food waste either. Just about anything can be thrown in the soup pot.
Financially things are good - I'll have about $50 leftover for the month as well as an extra $300 put aside to pay the Flood repairs in February. Hope your fumes last til the end of the month!!
