I LOVE Woman's Day magazine. Yesterday I received the August 4th edition and it was loaded with tips and tricks. I especially liked the following tips from Arianne Cohen, under Solutions:
5 Painless Ways to Cut Household Bills
- Skip the paper towels. Savings: $60.00 a year (We do this! We have a ton of white rags and keep them in the kitchen)
- Brew Smart. Buy coffee and tea loose (not in pods). (Done. I've never bought the pods, but this is a reminder not to buy the ice tea in bottles...I should brew it myself!)
- Close the closet doors. If they're open, you're paying to cool your closets. Savings: $30.00 per summer. (Wow. Didn't know this! I'm closing closet doors immediately!)
- Cancel garbage pickup. Instead, drive your trash and recycling to the dump. (Nope, can't do this, because we are in a planned community with an association fee. But if you are not, you could save $300-450 a year!)
- Simplify your beauty routine. Try using just shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, face lotion and hairstyling product. Savings: $100 per year. (Um, no, I will still need to purchase make up. No ifs, ands or buts about that one! But using LESS of the product should save a ton of money!)
My favorite idea above? The closing of the closets....who would have thought it would make such a difference!

I read this issue, too! I had the same reaction to the trash pick up cost. I don't have a choice - our town charges $90 a year for trash and recycle pickup.
I do agree with simplifying beauty routines, but I'm finding that I'm sacrificing quality on certain items by cutting back on cost. I'm not buying $500 face cream - lol! - but I've started buying better shampoo and conditioner. Nothing crazy, though.
Have a happy 4th weekend!
LOL. I was just going to post on some of their great tips, too. Great minds think alike.
I could do all but #4! Definitely not driving my own trash. Although, they just raised our bill. I might just consider! (NOT). :)
Happy 4th!
I'm glad to hear that others read
"Women's Day." I do, too, but honestly I associate it (and "Family Circle") with my mother, so I hide it under my copies of "Oprah," and "Real Simple" (which should be retitled, "Real Expensive!")
About saving by doing one's own garbage runs--I could do that, but I won't. It's worth the $22.50 a month to have weekly pick-up, which in my town includes recycling and bi-weekly yard debris pick up.
